Just a few days back, scrolling down my Twitter Handle, I came across this wonderful explanation on Types of Luck from the Profile of Naval Ravikant.
Dr. James H. Austin, a neurologist and Zen Buddhist wrote a book named ‘Chase, Chance, and Creativity: The Lucky Art of Novelty’. In his book, The Author explains the types of Luck, it’s role in our Life, what is called chance etc. The entire Article prepared based on his Research, Naval’s Explanation, reading some other articles on this and some of my inputs.
The four types are:
1. DUMB LUCK; THE LUCK WE ARE
MOST FIMILIAR WITH
It is
random or blind, where you have zero control over your Luck. No one prepares
for it; you just hope luck finds you. Suppose, you are walking in a street, see
a 20 bucks note and keep it, that it random luck. We also call it fortune.
2. LUCK BY ACTIONS AND PERSISTENCE
The more
you work; the more opportunities you create for yourself. That will, in turn,
increase your chance of getting success. Only hustle and constant hard work
until you get into it. The author also argues that we must avoid ‘waste
motion’, when we work only for work’s sake, which decrease our resources and
doesn’t change the outcome.
To get
lucky and create more opportunities all the time; spread many seeds, tend to
them, Prepare yourself to jump on opportunity and remain fit to be able to jump.
I am
writing Blogs, Tweeting about them. The more I’ll write the higher chances I
create for myself of getting lucky.
3. LUCK FROM PREPARATION
This is
where the luck favors the prepared Mind. The people with sound Background and
specific knowledge on anything will get it early. They become very good at
spotting better opportunities and skilled in the field that they see the break
before others even notice.

4. THE UNIQUE LUCK
Extreme
results are always achieved by extreme people, they keep refining themselves
till the time they become the best at what they do. Luck becomes their Destiny
and Opportunities seek them out.
Naval put it out in this way, suppose, you are the best person in the world at deep see diving and someone finds a treasure underwater which no one else can even attempt to take out. For them, the treasure is just a blind luck, the dumb luck as we discussed in First Type. Now, they approach you and ready to give half from it, their luck just became yours. That’s Unique!
Now, to
conclude this, I say, out of all Four Lucks, everyone can start from Number 2
and gradually they will be so aware about what they do and move to Number 3 and
then, Number 4 where you don’t have to find it, Luck finds you.
Synonym for
luck is chance; Replace the word ‘Luck’ with ‘Chance’
So when you
say ‘You are not Lucky’, you are also admitting ‘You are not taking enough
chances’.
While
taking enough chances, you may also fail at some or many, do not say, ‘This was
unlucky’, rather say, ‘This was unlikely to happen’ and see how everything
changes!
